Stay-at-home mom returning to work?

Stay at home mom returning to work? Have you considered a career in consulting? Many stay at home moms try returning to work as self-employed consultants. Following yesterday’s post on your reasons for becoming a consultant, I started thinking about how consulting suits stay-at-home moms returning to the workforce. In yesterday’s comments, you’ll see that Alicia wants to become a consultant so she can stay home with her two little boys. It sounds like Alicia is currently out in the workworld, but I wanted to address the topic of consulting as a work-at-home parenting option. It fits into the life changes category of people who become consultants.

I know several moms who work from home as consultants. I even know a few dads. These parents have decided that consulting fits with their family’s lifestyle. As a consultant, you can schedule your own hours, meaning you can avoid or limit daycare needs. By working evenings, weekends, naptimes, and quiet play periods, many consultants balance business and family. It’s hard work, since you don’t get the break that an exclusively stay-at-home parent might have. However, many find the overall rewards outweigh any drawbacks.

  1. Thanks. I am planning to hire a babysitter for a few hours a week so that I still get a nap…once I start up my consulting business and line up a few jobs.
